Our Gold DofE Open Canoeing Qualifying Expedition is a four-day, three-night expedition designed for participants who have completed the required Gold DofE training and practice expedition.
This is the expedition where your preparation comes together.
Over four days, your team will travel by open canoe, navigate its planned route, manage its expedition equipment, camp overnight and work together to complete its journey.
Active Outdoor Pursuits provides experienced expedition staff to supervise the expedition and an accredited DofE Assessor to assess the qualifying expedition.
What happens
on the programme?
Your Gold qualifying expedition
A Gold DofE qualifying expedition must be a genuine expedition undertaken by the team.
That means participants need to take responsibility for the journey rather than simply following an instructor.
Your team will be expected to:
- Demonstrate safe, effective and efficient paddling techniques.
- Follow its planned route & navigate throughout the journey
- Manage its own expedition equipment
- Travel together as a team & maintain appropriate timings
- Prepare and manage camp & organise food and cooking
- Make appropriate decisions & work safely within the environment
- Demonstrate the skills developed during training and practice
Our instructors provide the appropriate supervision and safety management while allowing the team to demonstrate its own expedition skills and independence.
Your expedition aim
Every DofE qualifying expedition needs a clearly defined team goal.
Your aim could involve:
- Investigating an area of environmental interest
- Exploring the history or geography of an area
- Developing a specific skill
- Studying wildlife or habitats
- Completing a photographic or creative project
- Developing teamwork or communication skills
The important thing is that the team understands its aim and can demonstrate how its expedition relates to it. Your DofE Leader or Active staff can provide guidance on developing an appropriate expedition aim.
Assessment
The qualifying expedition is assessed by an appropriately accredited DofE Assessor.
The assessment looks at the team and its expedition against the relevant DofE requirements. This isn’t a test of who can paddle fastest.
The assessor will be looking at the way the team works together, manages the journey, navigates, deals with challenges and completes its planned expedition.
Following a successful assessment, the assessor’s report is submitted through eDofE.
Gold DofE Open Canoeing Qualifying Expedition with Active Outdoor Pursuits

The Gold qualifying expedition consists of four days and three nights, with at least eight hours of planned activity each day.
The precise daily distances, paddling times and route will depend upon the expedition area, conditions, group ability and agreed expedition plan.

Active has been providing outdoor adventure activities in Scotland since 1999.
We are a DofE Approved Activity Provider, and our instructors have extensive experience delivering outdoor activities and expedition programmes for young people.
We are based in the Scottish Highlands and regularly operate DofE expeditions across Scotland.
Our objective is to provide a professional, well-managed expedition while allowing participants to experience the independence, teamwork and adventure that make the Gold DofE expedition so rewarding.
Why choose Active Outdoor Pursuits?
This programme is for Gold DofE participants who are preparing to complete their expedition by open canoe.
Participants should be capable of undertaking a multi-day expedition and be willing to work as part of an expedition team.
No previous multi-day canoe expedition is required where the participant is undertaking the appropriate Active training programme, but participants must be able to develop the required canoeing competence before undertaking the qualifying expedition.

What Active Outdoor Pursuits provides
Depending on your booking, Active can provide the specialist group equipment required for the expedition, including:
- Open canoes & Paddles
- Buoyancy aids helmets where appropriate
- Dry bags and/or barrels
- Tents & camping mats
- Camping stoves & cooking equipment
- Expedition safety equipment
- Other agreed group equipment
Full details of equipment provision will be confirmed with your booking.
What you need to bring
Participants are responsible for their personal clothing and equipment unless specifically included in the booking.
You should expect to bring:
- Suitable outdoor clothing & spare clothing
- Warm layers
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Suitable paddling footwear and extra shoes/boots
- Sleeping bag
- Personal toiletries
- Headtorch
- Water bottle (2 litre) & thermos flask
- Personal medication
- Food and snacks as advised
- Personal first-aid kit, midge cream & head net.
- Any other items specified in the joining instructions
Don’t buy expensive equipment unnecessarily. We can advise you about what is required and what Active can provide before your expedition.
Your food requirements will be confirmed before the expedition.
Safety & supervision
A qualifying expedition needs to be challenging, but it also needs to be properly managed. Active’s experienced expedition staff monitor conditions throughout the expedition and maintain appropriate safety procedures.
This includes consideration of:
- Weather, Water & wind conditions now and predicted
- Route and access
- Participant ability
- Equipment
- Fatigue
- Emergencies
- Communication
- First aid
Our instructors are there to manage safety and provide appropriate support — not to paddle the expedition for you.
The team remains responsible for completing its own expedition.
Where does the expedition take place?
Active Outdoor Pursuits is based at Craigower Lodge Outdoor Centre in Newtonmore, within the Cairngorms National Park. We run DofE canoe expeditions at carefully selected locations throughout Scotland. Common venues nearby include. The exact expedition area and route will depend on the requirements of the group, water conditions, weather, access, participant ability and the objectives of the programme.
This allows us to select appropriate environments rather than forcing every group onto the same route.
Open expeditions and private groups
Our Gold canoe qualifying expeditions can be available for individuals joining an existing expedition team as well as private school, youth and other groups, subject to dates and availability.
