For many people, the Instructor Training Course is the start of a new career. For Jim Miller, it became the foundation for an entire professional journey that has taken him from trainee to instructor, manager, trainer, assessor and ultimately business owner.
Looking back, Jim credits the support, opportunities and progression available through Active Outdoor Pursuits as instrumental in helping him build a successful and fulfilling career in the outdoor industry.
Finding the Right Path
When Jim first considered an outdoor career, he explored several training options. What set Active apart wasn’t just the course content, but the personalised approach from the very beginning.
“In truth Roy picked up the phone, chatted me through different qualifications that I had in part already pursued and how he could tailor the course better for me with my prior experience.”
Having already gained some relevant experience, Jim wanted a programme that recognised his existing skills while helping him broaden his knowledge across multiple outdoor disciplines.
“I had looked at others, but nobody seemed as knowledgeable or supportive of the prior experience I had before joining.”
The Instructor Training Course offered an opportunity to develop mountain, water sports and snowsports qualifications within a single programme, providing a clear route into professional outdoor instruction.
“I wanted to work in the outdoors, and it seemed like a brilliant way to gain mountain, water sports and snow sports experience and qualifications at once.”
Building a Career After the ITC
Unlike many trainees who move on immediately after completing the course, Jim continued his journey with Active.
Starting as an apprentice on the instructor development programme, he progressed into instructional roles before eventually becoming a manager. Each stage provided valuable experience and opportunities for professional development.
“I stayed on as an apprentice, then instructor and then manager at Active.”
That progression proved to be a defining part of his career.
“That progression was paramount to getting me to where I am in the industry now and supported me in my development through different awards and experiences required to teach most sports to a very enjoyable level.”
Today, Jim runs his own outdoor business, combining years of experience with a genuine passion for helping others enjoy the outdoors.
“Nowadays I run my own wee business and love every second of it.”
Achievements Along the Way
After years in the industry, choosing a single standout achievement isn’t an easy task.
From a personal perspective, one unforgettable accomplishment stands above many others.
“Perhaps paddling the Upper Gauley on SUP Grade 5+, which is awesome.”
Professionally, Jim takes particular pride in the positions of responsibility he has earned throughout his career.
“From a purely work perspective, most likely being in my roles to train and assess instructors and moderate providers.”
Yet for Jim, success isn’t measured only in qualifications and achievements.
“Perhaps the friends I have made along the way.”
The relationships, experiences and shared adventures have become just as important as the professional milestones.
Looking to the Future
After years of progression, qualifications and career development, Jim’s priorities have evolved.
With a successful business and a young family, his focus is currently on enjoying the lifestyle that his outdoor career has created.
“What with family and my business as it is, in truth I haven’t thought much about further development.”
That doesn’t mean the journey is over.
“I have no doubt I will pursue further things yet, but at the moment don’t know what they are. I just want to enjoy life and the outdoors at the moment.”
For many outdoor professionals, that balance between career, adventure and lifestyle is exactly what makes the industry so rewarding.
Jim’s Advice for Future Instructor Trainees
Building a career in the outdoors takes commitment, but Jim believes the rewards make every challenge worthwhile.
“It takes a lot of dedication and effort to develop within the outdoor community, but if you put it in it is worth every second.”
For anyone considering an Instructor Training Course, his advice is clear: embrace the process, invest in your development and stay committed to your goals.
The qualifications, experiences and opportunities will come, but it’s the passion and dedication you bring that will shape your future career.
Looking Back
Jim’s journey demonstrates just how far an Instructor Training Course can take you.
From trainee to apprentice, instructor, manager, trainer, assessor and business owner, he has built a career centred around adventure, learning and helping others enjoy the outdoors.
His story is proof that the ITC isn’t simply a course. For many people, it’s the first step towards a lifetime in the outdoor industry.
In One Sentence…
“The ITC gave me the foundation, experience and opportunities to build a career doing something I genuinely love.”
