Open Canoe Leader Assessment
The next course we have runs on the 13th and 14th April from our main base in Newtonmore, but we go where the water is appropriate.
Open Canoe Leader AssessmentThe British Canoeing Open Canoe Leader Assessment (formally 4* award) is a two day assessment. Before booking on to the course please ensure you meet the pre-requisites and your BCU or SCA membership is valid. If you are unsure of your current paddling ability, or have not been in a boat for some time then we can offer a private days coaching the day before the course to ensure you are current and ready for the open canoe leader assessment.
The cost of the course includes:
- The technical assessment
- Transport to and from the venues
- The use of a canoe (if required) although if you have your own you may prefer to use your own boat.
It does not include
- You will require all your own personal paddling & safety equipment.
- Personal registration or certification fees.
On the Open Canoe Leader Assessment course, You will look at a variety of different content with the emphasis on application of paddling techniques appropriate for moving water and more exposed open water. This is so that you perform the appropriate skills and manoeuvres in the real and accurate situations.
This can be broken down into four main categories which will be focused on.
- Part A – Personal Paddling Skills
- Part B – Rescue Skills
- Part C – Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
- Part D – Theory
The cost of the open canoe leader assessment course does not include accommodation, but there is the option to add accommodation if required at Cairngorms Adventure Centre.
