Open Canoe Award
The open canoe Awards are aimed at paddlers looking to develop their skills for a safe day out on the lochs or basic moving water.
Open Canoe Award
The Open Canoe Award Assessment looks at your personal paddling ability in water up to and including grade one terrain and force three winds. It also looks at your judgement, decision making and river reading on the river. You should be able to paddle this grade of water and wind in full control of your boat and be confident.
The award is a brilliant foothold in the schemes before then progressing further on to the leader awards which not only look at personal but also leadership ability on moving water. It is a one day assessment course but it is more about ensuring that you are at the standard for the pass. If you are close or at the standard already then our instructors may well do training on the day to get you to the required standard or above it so that they can sign you off and continue your development and learning beyond. It is likely that we will start the day on a Loch and then in the afternoon do a small river descent to look at controlling the boat in moving water and sound personal judgement and skills on route.
For the day we would normally meet at 09:00 and aim to finish up sometime around 16:00 but we need to ensure all aspects of the syllabus are covered so it might be a little later if needed.
For the cost of the Open Canoe Award, we include:
- The use of equipment and a boat if required – you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
- Training & assessment by fully qualified instructors
We do not include:
- Personal Certification & registration fees.
