Active 'Outdoor Philosophy'
"The journey through education for any child in Scotland must include opportunities for a series of planned, quality outdoor learning experiences."
-- Curriculum for Excellence through Outdoor Learning, LTS, 2010
Here at Active we believe absolutely in the value and importance of Outdoor Learning. We acknowledge the potential in all our young students and strongly feel that the outdoors is the best setting for getting the best from all young people, in particular those who, for whatever reasons, may not find the opportunity to 'shine' in the usual school environment.
From arrival to departure we strive to inspire our students, to treat each one as an individual, to listen to their ideas and to encourage them to take as much responsibility for their own experiences and learning as they can. We strive also to ensure that each individual leaves us feeling they have achieved something real and tangible; something which makes them feel that their self-confidence has grown and that it has the potential to continue to grow in the future.
While we are not a Field Study centre, we have a strong, overarching commitment to the outdoor environment and this is reflected in our approach to all our activities, whether in the woods, on the water, hills or crags. Walks and less busy moments are frequently enlivened with information about local wildlife and landforms, whilst the area’s colourful local history makes a further topic to help capture the young peoples’ imagination.
Traditionally, schools visiting Active have taken the experience back to their classroom and built on and benefitted from the learning the young people have gained here. If you feel your school would benefit from a more formal approach to 'Learning in the Outdoors' whilst here, please contact the office and we will be happy to discuss your needs.
We hope the above gives a sense of the experience your students will enjoy here at Active. For further clarification of the links between your course here and the Curriculum for Excellence and National Curriculum, please see our dedicated page.
Our aim at Active is that the young persons’ experience of the outdoors leaves them inspired with great memories, new friends, strong sense of achievement and a deepening appreciation of their environment. -- Active Outdoor Pursuits Policy Statement
