Starting at over 1000 feet at Loch Spey near the famous Corrieyairack pass the Spey descends to flow through Newtonmore and Aviemore. From there it flows through malt whisky country the remaining 60 miles to the Moray Firth. Mini rafting on the River Spey is on the fast flowing stretches between Grantown on Spey and Aberlour.
